Short answer

What is the ug word family?

The ug word family is the group of words that end in the rime -ug, the short u sound followed by g, as in bug, hug, jug, mug and rug. Children read them by blending the first sound onto -ug: h + ug, hug. The family includes blends such as plug, shrug, slug and snug, and longer words such as ladybug, bedbug, earplug and unplug.

  • The rime -ug is short u /u/ followed by /g/, as in bug.
  • Common three-letter -ug words: bug, dug, hug, jug, lug, mug, pug, rug and tug.
  • Ladybug is the American word; ladybird is the British one.
  • Shrug starts with the digraph sh plus r, three letters for two sounds.

About ug family words

The -ug rime is short u, the sound at the start of up, followed by a hard /g/. Short u is a relaxed sound made from the middle of the mouth, uh. It is easy to say, but it is close to short o in American English, so the two are often mixed up by beginning readers.

With nine three-letter words, -ug has plenty of CVC practice: bug, hug, mug and rug are everyday words that are easy to picture. The second group adds blends such as pl in plug and sn in snug, and shrug, which starts with the digraph sh followed by r. Glug is a fun sound word for reading aloud.

Most of the longer words are bug compounds that children enjoy: lady + bug, bed + bug, doodle + bug, litter + bug. Unplug and debug add a beginning chunk, un- and de-, which children will meet again in many words. Reading the parts separately and then together makes each long word feel like two short ones.

Common mix-ups with ug family words

-ug and -og (hug and hog)

Short u and short o are both open, central sounds. Read hug/hog, dug/dog and jug/jog side by side. Short u is said with a relaxed mouth; short o opens wider.

b and d in bug and dug

The only difference is the first letter. Rather than drilling the shapes, link each to its sound and mouth: lips pressed for b, tongue tapping behind the top teeth for d.

Short u and the letter name

If your child reads mug as mewg, they are using the letter name. Practise the short sound alone, uh, as in up, and point out that u says uh in these words.

Ug family words activities

Bug hunt

Hide -ug word cards around the room, each with a small bug drawn on it. Your child finds them one by one and reads each word before putting it in a bug jar.

Tug of words

Tie a word card to each end of a rope, one -ug and one -og. Name one of the words; your child tugs the rope toward the card you said and reads it.

Mug sort

Label two mugs -ug and -ig. Your child reads word cards and drops each one into the right mug. Tip them out and check together at the end.

Hug a sound

Say an -ug word. Your child says the first sound, opens their arms wide for -ug, then gives themselves a hug while saying the whole word. It makes blending a physical action.

Ug family words: frequently asked questions

What words are in the ug word family?

Bug, dug, hug, jug, lug, mug, pug, rug and tug are the three-letter ones. With blends you get plug, shrug, slug, snug, glug and smug, and longer words include ladybug, bedbug, earplug and unplug.

Is short u hard for children?

The sound itself is easy to say, but it is close to short o, so children often confuse the two when reading. Mixing -ug and -og words is a good way to practise the difference.

Is ladybug one word?

Yes. In American English ladybug is written as one word. It is a compound of lady and bug, so children can read it in two parts.

What comes after the ug family?

The -un family is another short u family with common words like sun, run and fun. After that, short e families such as -et and -en.
