Disclaimer and conflicts of interest

Last updated

Dyslexia Steps gives away a screening test and sells a reading-practice program. The test is a screening, not a diagnosis, and nothing on this site is medical, psychological or educational advice. Because the same site gives the free result and sells the program, this page lists every commercial interest that could colour what you read here.

A screening, not a diagnosis

The test result is a profile of reading skills from one sitting at home. It does not diagnose dyslexia or any other condition. Only a qualified professional, such as an educational psychologist or a speech and language professional, can diagnose dyslexia, and the right person depends on your country (see how dyslexia is diagnosed).

A result with no signs does not rule dyslexia out, and a result with signs does not confirm it. Do not delay an assessment, or a conversation with your child's teacher, because of an online result.

What the numbers can and cannot tell you

The expectations and cut-offs behind the scores are cautious choices, not norms from a tested sample, and the test has not been compared with professional assessments, so we publish no accuracy figure for it. The test content in all 6 languages is a draft awaiting review by a reading specialist. How every score is made is on the methodology page.

Conflicts of interest

These are the commercial relationships that touch the test, the games and the pages.

We sell the program

The test and its result are free. The full program costs $9.99 a month or $39.99 a year, with no trial period; payments are handled by Creem as merchant of record. The child test's result screen shows the program and its prices next to the profile, and the program starts from the focus skill the test found.

Buying changes no result

The test is scored in your browser before any price is shown, and it is scored the same way with or without an account or a subscription.

A free tier leads to the paid one

A free account opens the first 5 levels of each of the 7 worlds; the rest needs a subscription.

Sister products

Dyslexia Steps is made by Indiex, which also makes Dyscalculia.io (a dyscalculia test and number practice), The Face Analysis and Fashio AI. The footer links to them, and some pages link to Dyscalculia.io; these are links to our own products.

No advertising and no affiliate links

The site shows no advertisements, and no link on it earns us a commission.

No study of our own program

The pages cite research on the skills the games practise. No study has tested the Dyslexia Steps program itself, and we do not claim that it improves reading by any amount.

Expert review

The test and program content has not yet been reviewed by a reading specialist. When it is, the reviewer's name and title will appear on the about page and the review will be dated on the changelog. Until then the site shows no review badge.

Errors and corrections

If something on this site is wrong, write to [email protected] with the page and what you found. A confirmed correction is fixed and dated on the changelog.

Terms, privacy and refunds

The terms of use set out liability, accounts and subscriptions; the privacy policy explains what data the test and the program use; the refund policy covers payments.
