Short answer
What are short o words?
Short o words contain the vowel sound /o/ heard in hot, as opposed to the long o in home or boat. The simplest short o words are CVC words: a consonant, the letter o and a consonant, such as dog, pot, mop and log. In American English the short o sound is close to the ah in father, and children read these words by blending three sounds together.
- In General American English, short o is usually pronounced /Ι/, like the a in father.
- Short o CVC words fall into word families such as -ot, -og, -op, -ob and -od.
- Short o is usually introduced after short a and short i.
- The most common confusion is between short o and short u, as in hot and hut.
About short o words
The short o sound is the vowel in the middle of hot. In General American English it is an open, relaxed sound made with the jaw dropped and the tongue low and back, very close to the ah a doctor asks for. A simple anchor is octopus: say /o/, /o/, octopus, and have your child copy the open mouth shape. It is not the letter name oh, which belongs to long o words like home and boat.
Accents matter with this vowel. For many American speakers, the o in dog and log sounds slightly different from the o in hot and pot, and some speakers use the same vowel in both. Either way, the spelling pattern is the same, so teach the letter o as one short sound and accept your child's natural accent. Start with the -ot and -op families, which have a clear vowel and lots of everyday words like hot, pot, mop and top.
Every word on this page is a plain CVC word read with three single sounds. Words like frog and stop also use short o, but they begin with a consonant blend, so they are taught a little later. Short, systematic practice with fully decodable words like these is the kind of phonics teaching with the strongest research support for children who find reading hard. Watch out for common words that look similar but do not follow the pattern: son and won use the letter o for a short u sound, and do and to are sight words.

Common mix-ups with short o words
Short o and short u (hot and hut)
Both vowels are made low in the mouth, so they can sound alike. For short o the jaw drops further and the mouth is rounder and more open; for short u it is more relaxed and less open, like a small grunt. Read pairs like cot and cut, log and lug, dog and dug.
Short o and short a (hot and hat)
In American English, short o sounds like ah, which some children confuse with short a. Show that short a spreads the lips more while short o keeps them loose. Contrast pairs like pot and pat, mop and map, cod and cad.
Reading the letter name oh
If hop becomes hope, the child is using the letter name. Point out that in a three-letter word, o usually says its short sound. The long oh sound comes later with silent e and vowel teams like oa.
Short o words activities
Say ah at the doctor
Pretend to be a doctor with a spoon or craft stick. Ask your child to open wide and say the short o sound. Then show a word card like pot, and they read it with the same open mouth on the middle sound. Swap roles so they check your mouth too.
Hop on the word
Lay out short o word cards on the floor, such as hop, top, dog and log. Say a word and have your child hop onto the right card, then read it aloud. For a challenge, add one or two short u cards and see if they can hear the difference.
Dot to dot sounds
Write a word in large letters with a dot under each letter. Your child touches each dot as they say its sound, then sweeps a finger under the whole word to blend it. The dots make it clear that every letter has a job.
Play dough words
Roll play dough into snakes and shape the letters of a short o word, such as mop or dog. Say each sound while pressing the letter, then read the whole word. Squash one letter and replace it to make a new word, like mop to top.
