Short answer
What are short u words?
Short u words contain the vowel sound /u/ heard in sun, as opposed to the long u in cute or the oo sound in tube. The simplest short u words are CVC words: a consonant, the letter u and a consonant, such as bug, cup, run and mud. Children read them by saying each of the three sounds and blending them into one word.
- The short u sound is written /u/ or /Κ/ and is heard in up, sun and bus.
- Short u CVC words fall into word families such as -ug, -un, -ub, -ut and -um.
- Short u is usually introduced after short a, short i and short o.
- The most common confusion is between short u and short o, as in cut and cot.
About short u words
The short u sound is the vowel in the middle of sun. The mouth is only slightly open, the lips are relaxed, and the tongue rests in the middle, so the sound is a quick, soft uh. A good anchor is up: say /u/, /u/, up, and point upward each time. The letter name you belongs to long u words like cute and mule, so keep it apart from the short sound at first.
Short u is often the last short vowel taught, but it is not the hardest to hear. Its main challenge is that the same uh sound shows up in other spellings, as in come, love and the second part of words like sofa, so children will meet it spelled in several ways. Start with the letter u in CVC words, where the link between letter and sound is reliable. The -ug and -un families are a friendly start: bug, hug, rug, sun, fun and run.
Every word on this page can be read by blending three single sounds. Words like put and push use the letter u for a different vowel sound, so they are left off this list and taught separately. Words like duck and much also have short u, but they end in the letter pairs ck and ch, which come in later digraph lessons. For children who find reading difficult, research favors this kind of step-by-step phonics practice over approaches that do not teach letter sounds directly.

Common mix-ups with short u words
Short u and short o (cut and cot)
Both vowels sit low in the mouth. For short u the mouth is barely open and relaxed; for short o the jaw drops further and the mouth opens wide, as if saying ah. Read pairs like hut and hot, bug and bog, and dug and dog, and ask your child which one they hear.
Short u and short a (cup and cap)
Short a is a wide, bright sound and short u is a small, soft one. Have your child put a hand under their chin: the jaw drops much more for cap than for cup. Contrast pairs like bun and ban, mud and mad, and rug and rag.
u in put and push
Some common words use u for the sound in book, not the sound in sun. If your child reads put to rhyme with but, they are applying the rule correctly. Tell them put is an exception and practise it separately, away from this list.
Short u words activities
Point up for u
Every time your child hears the short u sound, they point up, since up is the anchor word. Read a mix of words aloud, such as sun, sat, bug, big and cup, and watch for the pointing finger. Then show the written words and read them together.
Bug in a rug
Hide small paper bugs under a towel, each with a short u word on its back. Your child pulls out one bug at a time, reads the word, and uses it in a short sentence. Keep a pile of the words they read smoothly and a pile to try again.
Sound out and swap
Write a word like hug with magnetic letters. Your child reads it, then you swap one letter to make a new word: hug, bug, bun, sun, sum. Each change should be read aloud before the next swap, so your child checks every letter.
Writing in the air
Say a short u word slowly. Your child writes each letter in the air with a straight arm while saying its sound, then says the whole word. Large arm movements link the feel of the letter to its sound and are a common structured literacy technique.
